MY MOTHER-IN-LAW HID A RATTLESNAKE UNDER MY PILLOW FOR MY $25 MILLION LIFE INSURANCE — BUT SHE EXPOSED A SECRET FAR MORE DANGEROUS

PART 2 — THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO REPLACE ME

The first scream came at 2:17 in the morning.

It was not Edgar.

It was Kristina.

A sharp, terrified scream ripped through the house and woke everyone sleeping inside it.

For several seconds, I remained completely still on the living room sofa.

I had not slept.

Not even for a minute.

After discovering what Kristina had done, my body was exhausted, but my mind refused to shut down.

The snake.

The insurance policy.

Heather Perkinson.

The child.

Every piece of information moved through my thoughts like a warning I could no longer ignore.

Then I heard footsteps rushing upstairs.

Edgar shouted.

Another scream followed.

This one was filled with panic.

I picked up my phone and slowly walked toward the staircase.

By the time I reached the hallway, Edgar was standing outside our bedroom door, completely frozen.

Kristina was pressed against the wall.

Her face had gone pale.

Her hands were shaking.

“What happened?” Edgar demanded.

Kristina pointed toward the bed.

“There’s something in there.”

Edgar stared at her.

“What?”

“A snake!”

The hallway fell silent.

I watched my husband take a step backward.

For years, I had wondered what it would take for Edgar to finally see the truth about his mother.

Apparently, it took a snake beneath a blanket.

One of the neighborhood security officers had already been called. Within minutes, the bedroom was closed off.

The snake was safely removed.

A rattlesnake.

Exactly where Kristina had placed it.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Kristina had expected me to be the one sleeping in that bed.

Instead, I had spent the night downstairs.

And now everyone in the house was looking at her.

“HOW DID IT GET IN HERE?”

Edgar was the first to speak.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

“How did a rattlesnake get inside our bedroom?”

Kristina did not answer.

I stood at the end of the hallway and watched her carefully.

For the first time in years, she looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not disappointed.

Afraid.

The security officer asked everyone to move away from the door while he contacted animal control.

Edgar turned toward me.

“Where were you?”

“Downstairs,” I said.

“Why?”

I looked directly at Kristina.

“I couldn’t sleep.”

Her eyes met mine.

For less than a second.

But it was enough.

She knew.

She knew I had discovered the snake before Edgar found it.

And I knew she was responsible.

Still, I said nothing.

Not yet.

Because I wanted to know how far this went.

THE SECURITY FOOTAGE

At 3:06 in the morning, I made a decision.

I went downstairs and opened the security application on my phone.

We had installed cameras around the house years earlier after a series of break-ins occurred in our neighborhood.

Most of the cameras were outside.

But one faced the hallway near our bedroom.

Kristina had forgotten about it.

I replayed the footage.

At first, nothing appeared unusual.

Then, at 12:41 a.m., I saw movement.

Kristina.

She was carrying a small dark container.

My heart began beating faster.

She looked over her shoulder.

Then she entered the bedroom.

She remained inside for less than two minutes.

When she came back into the hallway, the container was gone.

I stopped the video.

My hands were shaking.

There it was.

Proof.

But when I played the recording again, I noticed something else.

Someone had followed her.

Not Edgar.

Not me.

A woman.

The woman appeared only briefly at the far end of the hallway.

She wore dark clothing and a hood.

Her face was hidden.

But Kristina had not looked surprised to see her.

They had been expecting each other.

THE NAME I COULDN’T FORGET

Heather Perkinson.

That name had already been bothering me.

Earlier that evening, I had found it buried inside a collection of old documents.

At first, I assumed she was simply someone connected to Edgar’s past.

But then I found the photograph.

Heather standing beside Kristina.

The two women were smiling.

And beside them was a young boy.

I stared at the photograph for a long time.

There was something familiar about his face.

His eyes.

His expression.

Then the truth began to form inside my mind.

The boy looked like Edgar.

I immediately rejected the thought.

It was impossible.

Edgar and I had been married for years.

If he had a child, I would have known.

Wouldn’t I?

But the documents told another story.

Heather had received money from an account connected to the Perkinson family.

Large payments.

Regular payments.

Payments that suddenly stopped several years ago.

The same year my $25 million life-insurance policy was created.

THE POLICY

The insurance policy had always seemed strange to me.

Edgar had insisted on it.

He said it was for our future.

For security.

For the family we hoped to build together.

At the time, I trusted him.

Now I opened the documents again.

I looked at the beneficiary information.

Edgar was the primary beneficiary.

But there was a secondary beneficiary.

A name I had never paid attention to before.

A trust.

The Heather Perkinson Family Trust.

My hands went cold.

The woman who had supposedly been “nothing more than an old friend” was connected to my insurance policy.

And suddenly, everything began to make sense.

The snake.

The money.

The secret meetings.

The boy.

Kristina had not been acting alone.

But the most dangerous question was still waiting.

Was Edgar involved?

THE CONFRONTATION

At 4:12 a.m., I asked Edgar to meet me in the kitchen.

Kristina remained upstairs.

Animal control had taken the snake away.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I placed my phone on the table.

Then I pressed play.

Edgar watched the security footage.

Kristina entering our bedroom.

The dark container.

The mysterious woman waiting in the hallway.

His face changed.

“What is this?” he whispered.

I said nothing.

He watched the footage again.

Then I placed the photograph of Heather on the table.

Edgar froze.

“Where did you get that?”

So he knew her.

I felt my heart sink.

“Who is she?”

He did not answer.

“Edgar,” I said. “Who is Heather Perkinson?”

His hands trembled.

For several seconds, he looked toward the stairs.

Then he looked back at me.

“She’s not supposed to be involved.”

I stared at him.

“Not supposed to be involved in what?”

His silence told me more than words ever could.

THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO REPLACE ME

Finally, Edgar spoke.

And what he said changed everything.

“Heather was supposed to replace you.”

I stopped breathing.

“What?”

He covered his face with his hands.

“It was years ago. Before the insurance policy. Before everything got out of control.”

“What was the plan?”

He looked at me.

And for the first time since I had known him, I saw real fear in his eyes.

“My mother wanted me to marry Heather.”

The room seemed to disappear around me.

“She knew about the money,” he continued. “She knew what you were worth. She knew about the inheritance your family left you.”

I stood up slowly.

“What did you say?”

Edgar swallowed.

“She wanted me to control the money.”

The truth hit me harder than any scream.

My marriage had never been what I believed it was.

Not completely.

Kristina had not simply hated me.

She had been planning to replace me.

And Heather had been waiting.

But Edgar still had not explained the child.

THE SECRET CHILD

I picked up the photograph.

“Who is the boy?”

Edgar closed his eyes.

“He’s mine.”

The kitchen became completely silent.

I could hear the refrigerator humming.

I could hear the clock above the doorway.

But for several seconds, I could not hear Edgar.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

“How old?”

“Ten.”

Ten years.

Ten years of lies.

Ten years of hidden payments.

Ten years of a family existing in secret.

I looked toward the ceiling.

Kristina was upstairs.

The woman who had hidden a rattlesnake beneath my pillow.

But suddenly, I understood something even more frightening.

The snake was only the beginning.

The real danger had been living inside my family for years.

A KNOCK AT THE DOOR

At 4:38 a.m., there was a knock at the front door.

Edgar and I both turned.

No one was expected.

I checked the security camera.

My blood ran cold.

A woman stood outside.

Heather Perkinson.

She was alone.

In one hand, she held a small suitcase.

In the other, a folder.

Edgar immediately stood up.

“No,” he whispered.

I opened the door.

Heather looked past me toward the kitchen.

She saw Edgar.

Then she looked at me.

“I know you think I came here because of the money,” she said.

I said nothing.

She slowly raised the folder.

“But there’s something you need to know.”

Behind me, Edgar shouted.

“Don’t listen to her!”

Heather ignored him.

She opened the folder.

Inside was a document.

A birth certificate.

But the name on it was not Edgar’s.

And it was not Heather’s.

I looked at the document again.

Then I looked toward the staircase.

Kristina was standing at the top.

Her face had gone completely white.

Heather looked directly at her.

“You should have told them the truth years ago.”

Kristina stepped backward.

“What truth?” I asked.

Heather looked at me.

Then she spoke six words that changed everything.

“The boy was never Edgar’s son.”

The house went silent.

And suddenly, the woman who had tried to replace me was no longer the most dangerous person in the story.

The person I had feared most was standing only a few steps away.

Watching me.

Waiting.

And for the first time, I realized that the snake beneath my pillow had never been the deadliest secret hidden inside that house.

To be continued...
